The New affordable smartphone enters Kenyan market – Daily Nation – Daily Nation

By COLLINS NABISWA
More by this Author

A new smartphone from a leading Chinese phone maker — Xiaomi — has been introduced to the Kenyan market.

Xiaomi is famed for its affordable but fairly good quality smartphones, with its latest model, the Redmi Note 2, which has entered the Kenyan market.

the Redmi Note 2 is the kind of phone that one needs when they need a good and wide screen with good features, yet on low budget.

Even though the phone’s specifications might not be as exciting as those of other established brands in the smartphone world, this budget phone is worth a try for those who want to have a feel of a smartphone.

Some people have had issues with displays larger than 5 inches, as they make it a tad uncomfortable to use with one hand, but the 5.5-inch Redmi Note 2 is not hard to get used to.

While it has the same screen size as that of iPhone 6S Plus, the Redmi Note 2 is smaller in size and fits comfortably in one’s palm.

Apart from having a 5.5-inch full-HD display, the Note 2 has a MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core 64-bit processor. It has 2GB of RAM as well as 16GB of internal storage and has, as well, a microSD card that supports up to 32GB of storage space. This means you’ll be able to get up to 52GB of storage if you need it.

The 13-MP rear camera is fine, but not terrific. It’s near perfect in the bright outdoors as it captures images in sharp colours. The camera however struggles in indoor light and might not get the perfect shade of the colours.

The Note 2′s camera locks onto objects pretty quickly, thanks to its 0.1 s phase detection autofocus, which is another plus supported by other software enhancements, such as panorama mode for taking wide landscape shots.

The front camera isn’t too shabby; you’ll be able to take good-looking 5-megapixel selfies thanks to the phone’s built-in beautifying fashion.

The interesting bit is that Xiaomi have gone with the Apple design handbook of putting all the apps on the home screen by default. It, however, runs on an Android version called MIUI.

MIUI drops the Android app drawer (where the apps are usually found) in favour

of putting all the apps on the home screens. You can easily sort apps into folders, and there’s a smart feature that lets you use one digit to move an app icon while using another one to flip the “page” to get to a new screen. This is way easier than bringing the app to the edge of the display.

the Redmi Note 2 has an amazing battery life of up to to nine hours with continuous use which is good for a phone with a 3,060 mAh battery.

the Redmi Note 2 comes in five different colours: white, dark gray, blue, pink and yellow. You can also buy a different cover to replace it, or use a different colour snap-on case to enhance the phone’s look.

The Redmi Note 2 comes with dual-SIM 4G. With this phone, you won’t need to upgrade your phone as telcos roll out 4G services across the country.

At Sh19,000, the Redmi Note 2 is quite a deal given its much better performance.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 Review: More Than Just A Galaxy Note 7 Lookalike – Forbes

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2. Photo: Ben Its

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2. Photos: Ben His

Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2 hasn’t been getting the respect it probably deserves. After all, the phone was overshadowed at its own very launch event by Xiaomi’s other new phone, the bezel-less Mi Mix. And even when the media and reporters (including myself) wrote about the Mi Note 2, we mentioned how much it looked like a Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Let's address to the "Note 7 ripoff" issue first. Yes, just like Samsung’s now dead phone, the Mi Note 2 has a 5.7-inch display with dual curved screens and back that meets in the middle for a perfectly symmetrical look. But it’s not fair to just dismiss Xiaomi’s product as copycat, because Xiaomi was actually the first phonemaker to introduce a curved glass back (before Samsung did it with the Note 5). And as Hugo Barra told Engadget, there’s really only one way you can do a curved screen, so this "curved front and back meet in the middle" design was just the logical next step for the company. Also, the Note 7 was introduced just two months ago — it’s almost certain that Xiaomi had begun development on the Mi Note 2 already.

The dual curves on the front and back of the phone gives it a really slim feel.

The dual curves on the front and back of the phone gives it a really slim feel.

I’ve been using the Mi Note 2 for four days and much like Xiaomi’s last flagship phone, the Mi 5, this is a beast of a phone with fast performance, solid camera and great build quality. And yes, while the Mi Mix is way more intriguing as a device (I’ll have a review of that coming later this week too), the Mi Note 2 is probably a more usable day-to-day phone.

That’s because while the Mi Mix is eye-catching, it’s a concept phone in every sense of the word (more on that in my review later). The Mi Note 2, however, is like the many great flagship phones of 2016 — except it’s got the latest and best Snapdragon chip, the 821. In both real world usage (like zipping between apps and editing videos via Viva Video) and benchmark testing, the Mi Note 2 comes out at the top of every Android phone I’ve tried so far this year. Oh, and I’m on the lower tier the 4GB RAM version, not the maxed out one with an extra 2GB of RAM.

(The Mi Note 2 scored a in 1828 on the Geek Bench’s single core test, and 4039 on the multi-core, that beats both the Galaxy S7′s 1589/3795; Google Pixel XL’s 1607/4147, but falls short of the iPhone 7 Plus’ 3464/5688).

As I mentioned in my Mi 5 review from earlier, Xiaomi’s custom Android skin, named MIUI (now in its 8th version), is a lot cleaner than people in the west give credit for. In particularly love that it allows you to customize the phone’s hard buttons. For example: the phone comes with the back button assigned to the right of the home button, but I can swap it to the left. And the home button/fingerprint sensor, although it’s "clickable" like the Samsung phones and older iPhones, Xiaomi gives the option to activate via touch. In much prefer this because having to press down

on a physical button feels outdated in a world of touch buttons (even Apple’s done away with that on the iPhone 7. Samsung phones are the only ones left).

MIUI 8 has a cleaned up notification shade. Toggles and notifications are no longer separated.

MIUI 8 has a cleaned up notification shade. Toggles and notifications are no longer separated.

The back of the Mi Note 2, much like the Galaxy line of phones, is an absolute fingerprint and dust magnet. I’m not sure why Xiaomi and Samsung love these shiny glass backs — it looks nice brand new, but within six seconds of using it’s filled with smudge. Going matte black, like the iPhone 7 Plus or HTC 10, would have looked much better in my opinion. Still, the Mi Note 2, much like the Note 7, is a gorgeous device. Them curves, man.

The glossy back of the phone collect dust and fingerprint easily and is so shiny it's almost like a mirror. I would have preferred a matte finish.

The glossy back of the phone collect dust and fingerprint easily and is so shiny it’s almost like a mirror. I would have preferred a matte finish.

Despite the Mi Note 2 having the same type of curve as the Note 7/S7 Edge, I had virtually no erroneous touches on the curved screen during my four days of use. This is amazing, because I had serious problems using the S7 Edge without accidentally tapping something on the screen. I think part of this is due to the curves on the Mi Note 2 not being as drastic, and partly because MIUI’s palm rejection software is just much smarter than the one on the Galaxy phones.

One of the new additions to the MIUI 8 that’s very useful is the "second space" feature, which essentially partitions a portion of your phone away from the main device’s hard drive, so you can store sensitive information, you might note want other people to see. Much like the Note 7′s Secure Folder, you can download second copies of apps onto the second space, and it’ll behave like a completely separate app from the first copy. That means you can have two Google Play accounts, or two WeChat apps (logged onto two different accounts on the same phone. Switching back and forth between the "main" phone and the second space takes only a tap, and everything is locked via password, PIN or fingerprint scan.

Speaking of fingerprint scanning, holy crap, the sensor on the Mi Note 2 is fast. This might be the fastest fingerprint sensor I’ve ever used, topping even the former king, Huawei P9. It’s so fast, I never see the lockscreen when I press on the sensor when the phone’s in a sleeping state — it just goes straight to the home screen instantaneously.

Two variants of the new Rs 500 note surface, the RBI says printing defect due to rush – Times of India

BENGALURU: Just two weeks into circulation, there are already different variants of the the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Rs 500 notes+ , which experts fear could not only create confusion in the minds of the citizens but also aid counterfeiting — countering which was one of the top objectives of the Centre’s demonetization move and introduction of the new notes .

TOI found at least three case studies where the new notes have been found to vary from one another. In case of one note Abshar (he goes by one name), a resident of Delhi, says: “There is a more than the visible shadow of Gandhi’s face, besides alignment issues with the national emblem on the note and even serial numbers.”

Rehan Shah, a resident of Gurugram pointed out that the size of the borders of the notes were different. In case of two notes a Mumbai resident got when he made change for Rs 2,000, the notes were of different colours, with one being of a lighter shade. While he shared the picture with TOI, he refused to go on record.

the RBI spokesperson Alpana Killawala, said: “It is likely that the notes with printing defect has got released due to the current rush. However, people can freely accept such a note in the transaction or return it to the RBI.”

Forms Home Secretary GK Pillai told TOI: “the Prevention of counterfeiting is almost impossible, with the official mechanisms in Pakistan printing notes with access to as much sophistication as we do. So, it is only a matter of delay and the temporary suspension of such notes into the country that one could have hoped for. I cannot yet comment on the Rs 500 notes, as I am yet to see them, the Rs 2,000 notes are of good sophistication. That

said, if the RBI says there is only one new 500-note it is printing, there should exist only one.”

Experts pointed out that multiple variants of the official notes will aid people attempting to infuse fake notes. “As it is people find it difficult to understand all the features of an official note and fail to check for everything before they accept one. Now, if there are too many versions of the official note, slipping into another would be easier than otherwise,” a service IPS officer who has dealt with crime for many years said.
Between January 2013 to September 2016, India has seized Rs 155.11 crore worth of counterfeit currency notes, Rs 27.79 crore of which was seized in the first nine months of this year. While the value of the seizures is hundreds of crores, the number of notes seized are only 31 lakh, equipped that majority of them were of high denomination notes. Also, the seizures, as security agencies point out time and again, are only a tip of the iceberg.
Forms DG&IG of Karnataka ST Ramesh, while echoing the views of the experts of di fferent variants of notes aiding the fake currency rackets, said: “Local printing of such notes has almost stopped. The notorious gangs from Coimbatore are more or less dead and all the notes come in from outside through Nepal, Bangladesh and other countries. Different variants of the official currency will certainly aid counterfeiting and it must be curbed immediately, unless of course, the RBI has strategically released this.”

The chinese company reportedly announced its presence at the Xiaomi CES 2017 via Twitter, teasing fans of an all-new global product to launch soon. The company is yet to reveal what the product will be. Moreover, the company also kept mum on whether a smartphone or a different device will be shown in the Xiaomi CES 2017 event.

Furthermore, the Xiaomi CES 2017 is slated to head on to the Las Vegas, Nevada event to join the smartphone manufacturers selling into the global market. Dozens of smart products are speculated to launch worldwide from phones to rice cookers in the Xiaomi CES 2017, Slashgear reported.

The Chinese company previously went without a US appearance. The global product to hit the Xiaomi CES 2017 may reportedly mean anything. However, the Xiaomi Mi Box smart set-top box is said to be a reasonable pick. Note that the Mi Box was also

successful in the tech market.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is released in China and sold out in 50 seconds – M3

It was certainly a so-called blixtförsäljning, where it is intended that the products will end at breakneck speed. But 50 seconds is still a decent quick time for the chinese Xiaomi to sell its new phone Mi Note 2.

It is Androidcentral that reports on the successful inledningsförsäljningen, and adds that a second blixtförsäljning will take place on 8 november. The big question should be if you can outdo sekundrekordet. It is not known how many units that went up for sale for the first time.

Sverigeplanerna for Mi Note 2, which initially seems to be intended to deal with local competitors such as Huawei and Oppo, is still unknown. However, did Xiaomi Sverigeentré earlier in the year, with the flagship Mi5, as we have prized for that it gave great performance for the money. Mi Note 2 is at least in a

“global” variant that will support multiple 4g bands.

Xiaomi, despite its relative okändhet in our latitudes one of the world’s really big smartphonetillverkare, and it will be exciting to see when (or if) you choose to launch more of their phones on the Swedish market. Launched the Mi Note 2 is particularly well timed as seen in the light of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7-failure then the phone strongly reminiscent of each other.

Xiaomi Mi Mix Sold Out In 10 Seconds: Bezel-Less Phone Hotter Than Mi Note 2 – Tech Times

Talk about selling like hot cakes: the Xiaomi Mi Mix sold out just 10 seconds into its first flash sale. And you thought the Mi Note 2 record of 50 seconds was impressive.

The 6.4-inch bezel-less Mi Mix turned out to be an instant hit for consumers. But while the edgeless display is certainly an attention grabber, the handheld’s success can be partly attributed to the company’s decision to go with a ceramic unibody over the aluminum alloys that most of the recent premium flagships use.

The Mi Mix Ceramic Casing

For the most party, the Mi Mix is made up of ceramics. This includes the frame, back panel and buttons.

According to Xiaomi, the Mi Mix’s ceramic composition makes it scratch-resistant against common materials. It scored an 8.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, which means that only materials as hard as — or harder than — Corundum (which comes in the form of ruby and sapphire) and diamond, can scratch it.

“Years of careful usage, it will hardly leave signs of dents and discoloration,” Xiaomi elaborates on the Mi Mix’s ceramic composition, which, when coupled with a bigger edgeless display, may also prove to be a better selling point than the Mi Note 2′s curved display.

The only real caveat of the Mi Mix is that it only comes in black. However, the color options don’t seem to bother most consumers.

The official numbers on how many units were sold for each of the two handhelds are yet to be announced. The only basis for gauging consumer interest for both phones is the amount of time it took for them to get sold out, a metric at which the Mi Mix beats the Mi Note 2.

Under The Ceramic Hood

Another reason the Mi Mix turned out to be a huge hit is that it sports Qualcomm’s latest SoC, the Snapdragon 821, which is a quad-core with two of its cores clocked at 2.35 GHz while the other two are at 2.16 GHz. The Snapdragon 821 is packed with an Adreno 530 GPU.

The Mi Mix comes in two configurations: a regular one that has 4 GB of RAM with 128 GB of UFS 2.0 storage, and an exclusive edition that comes with 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB storage. Aside from the bigger RAM and storage, the exclusive edition also has a fingertip sensor and rear camera rimmed with 18K gold.

Speaking of cameras, the Mi Mix sports a dual-LED flash, f / 2.0 16 MP PDAF rear shooter that is capable of shooting 4K and 1080p

videos at 30 fps and 720p at 120fps. It also features touch focus, geo-tagging, HDR, face detection and panorama.

For the selfie camera, the Mi Mix comes with a humble 5-megapixel one, which can capture 1080p videos. According to Xiaomi, while it’s under the screen, the camera rotates together with the phone when users want to take a picture.

To power the 6.4-inch 2,040 x 1,080 IPS display, Xiaomi didn \ ‘t hold back with the battery. The Mi Mix packs a 4,400 mAh battery that can last up to 13 hours when gaming and 256 hours while in sleep mode. With the Snapdragon 821 processor, the Mi Mix can be quickly recharged with Qualcomm’s fast-charging technology using the USB Type-C port.

As for connectivity, the Mi Mix supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and LTE, and offers a dual-SIM setup. There’s no microSD card slot for memory expansion.

Out of the box, both Mi Mix configurations will sport the MIUI 8.0, which is based on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. The regular configuration, 4 GB RAM/128 GB storage, comes with a $ 639 price tag while the special edition with its 6 GB RAM/256 GB storage and 18K gold is more than $ 100 pricier, at $ 749.

However, the Xiaomi Mi Mix’s availability for the United States and other countries is still in question. The phablet is only currently available in China with no word on releases for other countries. Moreover, a Xiaomi executive previously came out say that a Mi Mix launch outside of China does not make sense.

While preorders can be placed Xiaomi’s online store, all users really get is a notification window saying that the company will send an email once the device becomes available for the specified shipping address.

Xiaomi Mi Mix and Mi Note 2 sell out again in less than a minute – GSMArena.com

Good news – Xiaomi Mi Mix stock lasted three times longer than last time. Bad news – that still means it sold out in 30 seconds. It’s the bezel-having sibling, the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, lasted a full minute before the fans picked up every last unit available.

Of course, it’s not clear how much stock Xiaomi had to begin with so we shouldn’t take this as a sign of huge demand. Still, the demand definitely outstrips supply and if you want one you’ll have to be quick.

Your next chance will be on 11.11 (that is November 11), which something of a Black Friday in China with big sales events. Here’s hoping the factories would have cranked out more units by then.

Here are the prices for

reference (China only for now, though we long for the Mi Mix to launch worldwide):

Phone RAM/storage Price
Xiaomi Mi Note 2 4GB, 32GB CNY 2,800
6GB, 128GB RMB 3,300
Xiaomi Mi Mix 4GB, 128GB CNY 3,500

XIAOMI Promotes the New Note 2 Camera Using Photos of Morocco – Morocco World News

Rabat The Chinese electronics company XIAOMI chose ancient Moroccan monuments and tourist attractions for its newly released phone, the XIAOMI MI Note 2 the default photos app.

XIAOMI held a press conference on November 1 in Beijing where XIAOMI’s CEO, Lei Jun, unveiled the company’s newest smartphone, the MI Note 2. The company features photos of Moroccan tourist attractions to promote its 23-megapixel camera.

A researcher of Chinese-African relations at the university of Sun Yat-Sen’s Institute of Politics, Nasser Bouchiba, explained that the Chinese tech giant late a delegation to take photos of tourist attractions in Morocco. These include the narrow streets of the old medina in the city of Chefchaouen, the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca, and the traditional colorful pottery dishes of Marrakech.

The company’s initiative is a strong promotional campaign for Morocco, especially considering the phone reportedly sold out after only 50 seconds of its release during the device’s first flash sale.

According to the Arabic-language news source, Hespress, Hassan Bouchiba stated that these photos would be available to tens of millions of Chinese citizens, and thus a "free" advertisement for Morocco’s tourism industry.

"Morocco’s decision to waive the visa requirement for Chinese citizens visiting Morocco

during the King’s last visit to Beijing will be an added incentive for them to choose Morocco as a tourist destination," added Bouchiba.

The Moroccan researcher, who is optimistic that Chinese tourists will boost Moroccan tourism, hoped that "tourism professionals would capitalize on this experience and integrate smartphones into their future promotional campaigns andbe more creative in marketing Morocco’s tourism."

According to the China Tourism Academy, the number of Chinese tourists in Morocco has seen a 300 percent increase since the signing of a memorandum of understanding last May that strengthened bilateral cooperation in tourism.

‘Xiaomi Mi Note 2′ News & Updates: Looks Like A Samsung Galaxy Note 7, But … – Gamenguide

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is not a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 lookalike but it is beyond that. Some people disregard the beauty of the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 as it is often compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. However, the Samsung right now is dealing with an image crisis due to the exploding units.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has a 5.7 inch display. The screens and back are dual curved. It has a perfect symmetrical look as the screens and back meets in the middle.

Some people criticizes it for copying the curved glass but it is actually the first one that uses a curved glass back. The company has already introduced it before the launch of the Samsung Note 5 according to a report in Forbes.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 looks slimmer as the dual curves on the front and back meet. If you’re using your phone frequently, then the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is probably a best choice as you can use it every day. The smartphone has an 821 Snapdragon chip. It is user friendly when it comes to apps and editing. Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is one of the top Android phones this 2016.

The Apple’s iphone 7 plus is still leading on the single-core and multi-core test. It has 3464/5688. However, the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 beats the Galaxy S7 and Google the Pixel XL as it has 1828/4039. iPhone S7 has 1589 single and 3795 of

multi-core only while Google Pixel XL has 1607/4147.

The Android skin of Xiaomi is much better and cleaner. You can also customize the hard buttons. Xiaomi and Samsung looks alike with their shiny glass backs. The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has an absolute fingerprint back and duct magnet. The bad thing of having a shiny back is that it looks dirty after a minute of using, touching or rubbing it.

The palm rejection software of MIUI is functioning well than the Galaxy Phones. Xiaomi phones are cheaper compared to android phones, no wonder why it was reported to be sold out in 10 seconds, according to Techtimes.

It Took Only 50 Seconds For The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 To Sell Out In The First Flash Sale – Tech Times

To say that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is popular in China would be an understatement. According to reports, the device, the latest smartphone of the company, sold out a mere 50 seconds from the launch of its first flash sale.

Mi Note 2 As Galaxy Note 7 Replacement

The launch of the Mi Note 2 could not have come at a better time, as customers are still looking for a replacement to the discontinued Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Xiaomi is offering the smartphone as a worthy alternative to the Galaxy Note 7, with a similar dual-curved design and powerful specs.

The first flash sale of the Mi Note 2, which took place on Nov. 1 in China, saw all the units being offered by Xiaomi sold in just 50 seconds, officially breaking the record previously held by the Mi 5.

the Xiaomi Flash Sale

It should be noted, however, that the trend of selling out smartphones in such a short amount of time has been how Xiaomi handles its sales. Xiaomi creates an initial supply that is lower than the expected demand for the smartphone, causing the first batch to sell out quickly as there are fewer units of the device to start with than the number of customers looking to make the purchase.

At first, this might seem like bad practice, as the companies would want to sell as many units of new products as they could from the start. However, with how Xiaomi is conducting its sales, the company is able to keep shipping and inventory costs low while maintaining the high demand for

the devices, as seen in the case of the Mi Note 2.

It is unknown whether the Mi Note 2 will be coming to the United States and when Xiaomi will do so, if it is being planned. Customers could place their orders through Chinese importers though, if they could not wait for an official announcement. The next flash sale for the smartphone will be on Nov. 8.

With the Mi Note carrying a price tag of only about $ 413 for the 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage version and about $ 487 for the 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage version, it has been described as an attractive option that offers similar features and specs to the Galaxy Note 7. The low price also increases its appeal over other choices such as the Google Pixel XL.

The Mi Mix, meanwhile, is set to go on its first flash sale on Nov. 4. Will the edge-to-edge bezel-less display of the smartphone allow it to sell out even faster than the Mi Note 2?
